In the world of winemaking, each bottle tells a story, and today, we're excited to announce the next chapter at Round Barn and Tabor Hill Winery with the appointment of Sage Briggs as our new Winemaker. This historic moment marks the first time Moersch Hospitality Group has named a female winemaker, and Sage’s arrival signals an inspiring step forward for both the company and the Michigan wine industry.
Sage’s journey into winemaking began with a deep-seated passion for the land, nature, and the art of transformation. Building on her academic achievements in Enology and Viticulture at Lake Michigan College in 2019, she secured an internship at Van Duzer Vineyards in Oregon’s renowned Willamette Valley, where she immersed herself in the rigorous craft of winemaking, from vine to bottle.
Sage brings with her not only technical expertise but a curiosity and drive that have been shaped by diverse experiences in the wine world. Before joining Moersch Hospitality Group, she worked as a tasting consultant at Lake Michigan Vintners and a lab technician at Van Duzer Vineyards, both of which expanded her understanding of production, sensory evaluation, and the delicate balance between science and art in winemaking.
In 2021, Sage joined Round Barn and Tabor Hill as a cellar assistant, working under the guidance of veteran winemakers. Her dedication and innovative approach quickly set her apart, and today, she stands at the helm of our winemaking team. With a creative philosophy that blends art, science, and nature, Sage is excited to continue crafting exceptional wines from the shores of Lake Michigan.
Sage's approach to winemaking balances cutting-edge techniques with a deep appreciation for the region's natural assets. She believes that winemaking is an art form, one that women bring a unique perspective to, particularly in an industry that has traditionally been male-dominated. Sage has spent her career breaking barriers and honing her craft, and her work at Moersch Hospitality Group represents the culmination of her dedication and passion for creating something complex, beautiful, and meaningful.
As for her favorite creations, Sage is particularly proud of Tabor Hill’s Sangiovese and Brut Rosé, as well as Round Barn’s Sauvignon Blanc—each of which embodies her belief in elevating the local terroir to craft wines that resonate with a sense of place.
Matt Moersch, CEO and Partner of Moersch Hospitality Group, spoke with proudly about the appointment of Sage Briggs as the company’s first female winemaker:
“We're incredibly proud to have Sage as part of our winemaking family. Her journey, passion, and innovative approach represent the future of this industry, and her vision aligns with our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in winemaking. As the first female winemaker at Moersch Hospitality Group, she not only brings invaluable expertise but also paves the way for a more inclusive future in our industry. We’re excited for what’s to come, both for Sage and for the future of Michigan wine.”
With Sage Briggs leading the charge, Round Barn and Tabor Hill are poised for an exciting future in winemaking. Her dedication to expanding the winery’s offerings, utilizing sustainable practices, and innovating with both local and international techniques promises to elevate the wines produced in Michigan’s Lake Michigan Shore region.
We invite you to join us on this journey as we continue to celebrate the exceptional talent, hard work, and vision that define Moersch Hospitality Group’s legacy.
