It’s all about family.
Think about your teachers growing up. Could you imagine any of them going from the blackboards of a classroom to the rolling hills of a vineyard? That is exactly the case for Rick and Sherrie Moersch, visionary pioneers behind Moersch Hospitality Group and some of Southwest Michigan’s most exciting wineries, including Tabor Hill, Free Run Cellars and Round Barn, a brewery, and a distillery.
Sherrie was a second-grade teacher and Rick taught high school biology when he was sought out to run the wine lab at Tabor Hill in Buchanan, Michigan (see, what you learn in school really does matter!). They fell in love with the vintner life and so did their sons. Tabor Hill became their playground; they would spend hours exploring the region, and on any given day may have been called out of school early to help on the bottling line. Not bad for a first job, right?
It wasn’t long before Rick and Sherrie purchased a 28-acre farm right next door where they planted, grew and sold grapes to Tabor Hill. Years later, they opened their own winery, Heart of the Vineyard, serving up family values along with great wines. But their foray into the world of wine didn’t stop there. See, the Moersch family doesn’t believe in “good enough”. When they started hosting weddings and events and their guests wanted to enjoy beer and spirits along with wine, what did they do?
They started making beer and spirits.
What would eventually become Round Barn Winery, Brewery and Distillery was the answer to their newfound calling. Where would they house such a venture? Little did they know a family vacation would cultivate more than memories. While driving through the hills of northern Indiana, Rick spotted a turn-of-the-century round barn and immediately knew how to bring it back to life. The Moerschs bought the barn, dismantled it and transported it 90 miles to the winery where it was restored to glory by those who knew how to treat every historic curve —Amish craftsmen.
It is this attention to detail, adherence to core values and resilient spirit that has helped the Moersch family carve their name within the hills of Southwest Michigan. When you visit any of the concepts within the group, from the energy of Round Barn Public House and intimacy of Free Run Cellars to the comfort of Tabor Hill, you immediately know you’ve become part of something special.
